On 4–5 November, the Urban Transport and Transport Planning working group arranged a seminar in Bergen, Norway. The successful event featured knowledge sharing, engaging discussions and insightful study visits.
During the event, topics such as urban development agreements, urban mobility assessments and the development of the famous Bergen Light Rail system were presented. Freight transport in cities was also discussed, focusing on urban space constraints and the municipality’s opportunities to promote sustainable freight transport in the city.
There was also room on the agenda for shorter updates from the various Nordic countries. The work on SUMP (Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans) in Finland was presented, as was the Swedish proposal for a new national plan for transport infrastructure, and how Norwegian research through SINTEF is being advanced in several different projects.
Participants also had the opportunity to visit a unique place in Bergen, the world’s longest tunnel for walking and cycling. Fyllingsdalstunnellen opened in 2023 and extends almost 3 km under the mountain Løvstakken. The tunnel originally served as an escape route for the light rail running through the mountain but has been upgraded to provide an easier commuting route for pedestrians and cyclists as well.
In 2025, the working group will continue its collaboration through several digital meetings.
