NVF Tunnels Working Group Met in the Faroe Islands

The NVF Tunnels working group held its latest meeting in Tórshavn from 8–10 September 2025, hosted by Landsverk (Faroese Road Administration). The event brought together around 85 participants for an open seminar, followed by a closed NVF member meeting and technical site visits.

The programme featured:

🔹 Refuge Rooms in Iceland, presented by Guðni Ingi Pálsson
🔹 Evacuation Lighting in Smoke-Filled Road Tunnels – What does research say, and how was it implemented in E4 Stockholm Bypass?, presented by Jonas Andersson
🔹 Distribution and Impact of Swelling Clay in Basalt, presented by Bartal Højgaard
🔹 Suðuroyartunnilin, presented by Einar Brimnes
🔹 Evacsound – Sound-based evacuation system / Trafsense – Fiber-based AID system, presented by Knut Olav Bjelland
🔹 Challenges of Upgrading Older Tunnels in Iceland, presented by Steinþór Björnsson

The following day, participants joined a technical tour of Faroe Islands’ tunnels, including:

  • Sandoyartunnel (10.8 km subsea tunnel, opened 2023)

  • Dalstunnel (2.1 km, under construction)

  • Húsareynstunnel (1.8 km, opened July 2025)

  • Eysturoyartunnel (11.2 km subsea tunnel, opened 2020)

  • Gásadalur tunnel (opened 2003)

The event once again highlighted NVF’s role as a platform for sharing expertise and strengthening Nordic collaboration in tunnel safety, construction, and maintenance.
